Road the RKC to work today without the windshield...
#21
I ride with mine off more than on. 70 and up can be tough, mostly my back. I kinda like the wind. In Sturgis I was trying out solo seats with rider's backrest (Mustang and HD) and boy what a difference. It was like having a shield on. I just gotta find one I like. I did use my windshield on the ride to Sturgis though.

Road Kings look great without a shield and used to love riding that way. Now like many others I am just getting too old and more than anything I hate how it feels like the skid lid wants to be torn from my head. I put a Memphis Shades fairing on with an LRS shield and it only comes off when I wash the bike. There is just no such thing as a short trip around town for me and never know where I will end up going.

When I first bought my 04 RK Custom the previous owner had a 15" shield on it. Hated it. He also included the 20" stock size shield. Better but don't like looking through. I have rode without a shield a few times but then I remember how much I hate getting smacked in the face with rocks and ginormous beetles. Gonna get a shield that is a good mix of height and deflection. Prolly an 18" LRS which measures 17 1/4". I will still ride around town with it off to show off my gorgeous internally wired apes. But for longer rides the shield is a must. Even though it is clean wind without, it still puts a strain on my bad neck.

I'm pretty much the same way. I love riding without when I stay 60mph or below... or 70mph for very short burst... but high speeds for any length of time - it is just not comfortable. I also have helmet issues. I don't mind the wind as much as the helmet wanting to fly off......
