Here is a thread on the proper way to replace the insert.

Just a few notes though.

1. A tap really isn't necessary.
2. The insert is a self tapping type with the slot positioned as the leading end as pictured in the link.

Just put the ferrel in with some epoxy, use a windshield bolt to put it in the hole so that you dont get any epoxy on the threads.

Easy cure, wont prematurely pull out again..

I just heated mine up with a hot air gun. Also had one of the faring screws...Screwed into the faring nut...whatever...and then slowly screwed it in with the slot facing down.

Better than super glue IMHO...but now I have another reference to look back on in the future. Thumbs up...and yes the fairing brackets do break or crack.

My Ultra fairing did same and I found two bolts missing at bottom/inside near cigg lighter next to fork legs. Problem gone !I believe they are 1/4-20. If you have batwing there are 4 bolts on backside.

MY R/H main black one just broke the other day..
It sounded like I hit a rock on the fairing...

Got home thought it was a rock looked for nick in the fairing..... clean

After more inspecting

I could move the Fairing at the speaker area a good 1-2 inches back and forth.

Took off the fairing and it broke right at the 90 degree at the top mount..

Clean break looked like a shear did it..

Welded it and backed it up with a .020 stainless angle
