Default Windshield Issues and height suggestions

I've taken a look at the sites for Cee Bailey's, Fastaire, Clearview, etc. My wife and I went out for a ride yesterday, her first on the new ride, and she was saying that the wind she is catching is not all that different than riding on my Fatboy without a shield. Sounds like the wind is catching her right above the nose and it catches the visor on her half helmet. Aside from the obvious, full face helmet or opting for the car, will a Clearview w/ recurve, Cee Bailey's SSC, or Fastaire "Aero" solve the problem? I hadn't planned to change the stock seat for the time-being, obviously going with a different seat might also change our riding profile when two-up.

Right now, at 5"10", the stock shield on the Ultra is about as high as I can go without riding with my vision completely through the shield, which I don't want. I need to find a happy medium.

Maybe this will work, they claim the curve makes the sheld act like it is 2 inch higher. I have not tried it yet.

I've always wondered what it is like riding in the passenger seat during various wind, crosswind conditions. I don't know about your wife but when it comes time formy wifeto describe a technical issue, she sure has thrown me off base often, I've got to experiance it myself before I can fix it.But I sure don't want to trade seats with her either. Maybe you need to get a shorter wife or mistress.

Helmet visors suck, as for the seat, it will drop her about a inch on most sportier models. The clearview recurve will work if you get the same size shield you have now, it will bump up the flow on you about 2 inches.

I'm also 5' 10", but riding an SG with a Mustang solo seat, which seats lower than your Ultra. I have an 8" Clearview w/recurve and it works well when my back is propped, i.e. using my backrest. Some turbulence remains, as I'm looking well over the WS, but most is getting through from below, and mostly noticeable with crosswinds. I've thought about buying a 9½" CV (the next size up), but it may be too high. I've also considered a Cee Bailey SSC, but am torn about which height to buy, probably either an 11" or 12", which is the equivalent height of an 8" and 9" normal WS. What also bothers me is that the SSC will not fit a WS pouch, which I have installed now and am getting attached to.

So, I may buy an SSC and take a chance on getting the right size, but I'm not rushing into it. I'd like to find someone that's my height with an SG who's used either the 11" or 12" SSC, just to get some feedback. All of the info I've seen involves the 13" SSC, which has gotten rave reviews.

Get one of these guys shields, you will not beleave how good they deflect the wind. At 5'10" you will want the 10" model, the extra area on the sides are outstanding at deflecting the wind away. I love mine. With the solo seat on I use the 9" height, 2 up the 10".

Contact clearview and see what they say. You might want to measure your passenger seat height, as well as your wife's height and inseam in case they helps them. (passenger seat height + wifes height -wife's inseam = wife's head height)

Here's a few standard answers- No one sizefits all needs and applications- A windshield should be bought based on its intended use - Either for one rider or two- It is common for a owner to have several windshields and change them for a specific use- Visors can actually catch the airflow and direct itinto your eyes & shake the helmet- Also, the effect of windshield airflow isis seriously affected by several things: Windshield height, shape, bikes MPH, riders height, seat height ( low Corbin or a HD tall plush air-seat ) ...Take the passengers height ( 5'5 ) , add the distance from the bottom of the riders seat to the top of the passengers seat ( 5 " ), the passenger will be about the same level as a 5'10 inch rider ... so to move the airflow over the passengers head the windshield would have to be taller than for just the rider alone....not an exact science but you get the idea. At55 mph, the airflow from a standard 8 inch windshield should slightly touch or go over a 6' riders head in a standard seat but would hit the passengers helmet, so a 10 inch would be a better choice for the highway. The Fast Aire Aero 8 inch or the Clearview Recurve 8 inch will work more like a9.5 inch standard shield. If you're not sure, the best compromise it to get the tallest windshield you can live with and keep her happy on back. As we all know... if she's happy, life is goodRenowww.FastAire.com

I just put on a 12" Cee Bailey SSC on my Ultra and rode 1500 miles with the wife as my passenger. I can say she did not really care for the increase in wind after putting on the SSC and she wears a full face helmet. She liked the protection of at least what the stock windshield offered. I on the other hand like the SSC windshield. It certainly took a few miles to get used to, as the 12" did have some buffetting in higher winds........not wind speed, but windy conditions. As for the height of the 12", it is just right to where I can look over the windsheild and the top of the screen not be in my line of vision as a distractor.
