Why? I paid money, and they broke within the warranty period.
On the other hand, if I were them, I'd be embarrassed at the poor quality and want to make it right, instead of trying to squeeze every freakin penny out of me, especially since I've purchaed 4 bikes from them in 5 years (including associated parts, labor, etc etc).
Its just a shabby way to treat loyal customers. They should be laying rose petals in my path whenever I walk in the door.
