Default couple minor issues on ride to Sturgis

Ok, I'm looking in my HD manual and I admit that I'm impatient. I had a great ride and a great time in Sturgis, but on the ride, I discovered that I had a worn out shifter shaft spline. No big deal as I removed my rear shifter and removed the front and rode it like a Dyna. That worked great till I lost that shifter as well! No, the threads didn't back off, the spline on the shifter rod/shaft was worn.

My question is, how difficult is it to R/R the shaft and I would love a youtube how to, or at least the page reference in the manual since I'm so flipping tired after this run. Don't get my wrong. I'm very grateful that this was my only problem after a wonderful long ride!

Just the shaft on which the levers ride? Very easy to replace, basically just pull primary cover off and pull out the shaft and install new.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply! I didn't think it'd be that difficult, but after seeing the side next to the jugs, I thought this might be a major repair! Again, thanks for the help as I'm flipping delirious right now!

Inner primary, not primary cover as that sounds misleading. Still easy though.

Wish I thought of that on the ride. I bought a new shifter in Sturgis thinking that was the problem after swapping the back to front. 1k miles later tried the rear shifter and it was gone! Thank HD God that the front shifter lasted till home while sliding it outboard a bit for some good teeth on the spline. Made it all the way home that way!

Seriously, John, I had a similar problem on an old Triumph. Very hard to obtain parts.

I just took a vice grips and marred up the shaft coming out of the case, forced on the shift lever, and tightened it down. Problem solved.
