Hello all,
Good thread. Do the crate motors have welded balanced cranks ?

I already have an S&S motor in my Glide, a 107", so my vote would be for an S&S 124". However I would choose one with the 585 cams, which would give smaller overall numbers than the stock 124", but a wider torque curve. At the time I bought my 107" I was advised against the 124 of the day as it wasn't very friendly for touring on - so I suppose I am a frustrated 124" owner at heart.....

We're talking 120R, JIMS and S&S motors here, they don't need welding!

They can be, when I bought my 124" I had them weld mine because I am going to turbo/supercharge.

No Jims. Quality is substandard and a lot of the parts in the Jims engine are proprietary which means you can't replace them with anything but more substandard Jims parts. On the other hand, the s&s is a pretty nice piece. Although they have occasional problems, their track record is way better than Jims.

How much wider is the torque curve? Any way you could post a sheet with each cam to illustrate the difference. I tried searching the web and couldn't find any. Thanks

There are several threads over in the Tech Engine section with numbers and the occasional graph on the 124", stock and modified. The 585 gives torque earlier than the stock 640 cam and one build with 585 cams is giving 120TQ at 2,500rpm, peak at 4,000. I could live with that.......

I should have added a link to this thread, as an interesting one on the 124s.
