brake lever play

brake lever play
i just replaced all the pads last week..not the best pads I could buy but I needed some asap on a limited budget. The back is great..the front however is not. I never paid attention to the lever play before but it just seems like theres too much in it now. It doesn't hit the grip even when I squeeze the hell out of it and its a good 1/2+ from the grip. Ive bled the brakes a few times and its still the same..Yesterday I noticed that when im on the hwy and apply the front brakes I get a grinding/whistle type sound from the right front, it doesn't do it when im going slow though. I took the caliper off and re cleaned everything again today..it still seemed to stop just fine..any ideas on what could cause the sound and do ya think I have too much play in the lever. I didn't put any grease or anything on the back of the pads so could that cause them to not seat right?
