Default Rear fender....is it plastic?

Looked at a 2006 RK standard this week for purchase. Was looking at some scratches on the rear fender. Knocked on the rear fender...sounded plastic. Reached down and flexed the side down at the tip. It sure felt like plastic. I was kind of shocked. The front fender was definitely steel. Was just wondering if the fender had been replaced or something. Bike is really clean and low miles. I think I want it!

That's exactly what I was thinking. I need to go back and check that out again. If it was steel, I would think it would be thick enough not to flex like it did on the lower side, right?

Was it at a dealership, or private party...?? Either way - ask if it's got any aftermarket parts & see what they say.

Did some searching for plastic fenders and can't find any. Maybe i had my head up my ****. But will definitely go check it out again. It was taken in on trade for a car. So, dealer, but not motorcycle dealer. Doubt they would know. But if it is in fact plastic, it was replaced for some reason and I will probably pass. Hope that is not the case.

Well it could and most likely is a stretched overlay or stretched replacement which would be for styling purposes. Does it go down below the mufflers? Pics would be good

The SG fascia is plastic. It's a separate add on piece to the fender.

Rick

Edit: I actually think it's nylon, the same material as the saddlebags.

Loc_tite, I'll have to check for that. I can't remember if dropped below the exhaust or not. I'll have to check that. I guess I could feel up inside to see if the metal fender is there. So this overlay, does it cover the entire rear fender? It does not have the passenger backrest so I was able to tap on the fender right behind the passenger seat. That's what got my attention.

Egldr05, can you explain a little more on that SG situation?

I won't be able to look at the bike again until Monday. I'll post what I find. Appreciate all the replys!
