convenience around tal of the dragon
We are planning a trip to do some of the rides around Cherahola, Tail of the dragon. I see there are biker friendly places to stay. Can anyone recommend a place to stay that lets me park the bike at the end of the day and walk to nearby restaurants, or do some of these biker friendly places have restaurants in them?
TIA

From what I have heard and read (I have no personal experience with the Tail-of-the-Dragon), the Tail-of-the-Dragon is not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced rider. Further, it is not what I would call a "pleasant ride"; it is a grueling ride, with traffic in both directions. If you don't pay attention, bad things can happen very quickly!
That said, I AM familiar with the Smoky Mountains National Park area and there a lots of opportunities to enjoy beautiful rides through the mountain ranges there.
In addition to the Cherohala Skyway, I'd recommend Route 40 into Gatlinburg (which takes you through parts of Smoky Mountains National Park) and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is quite scenic and is easy on/off along the way.
I think you'll have a great time and you'll meet plenty of like-minded folks along the way!

I go up there every year and ride both. But I always find a cabin within an hour or two of riding. There are plenty of places ... just google Smoky Mountain Cabin Rentals and have fun. You can get a cabin for just the week-end if you like.
BTW ... be careful. I hear they've been getting plenty of rain causing some road damage. Be on the look out. Be safe, have a blast!!

Check out the Maggie valley area. There are several motels that have covered areas for your bike and plenty of eating places nearby. I can't think of the name of it but it is on the right side of 19 going toward Cherokee about middle of town. Most of the motels are biker friendly. The ones in downtown are close to the eating places. You can also ride bikes to all the restaurants. http://www.smokyfallslodge.com/maggievalleymotel.html is the one that comes to mind.

If the weather cooperates, I'll be heading that way on Saturday. First night in Asheville, second night at A Holiday Motel. Supposed to be biker friendly, covered parking and a restaurant next door. Low rental rates and the people sound friendly on the phone. Their right down the road from the Wheels Through Time Museum. Monday and possible Tuesday, I'll find a place at the end of the day....
