Default Clutch in while starting in ( N ) ?

Buddy I ride with said a HD mechanic told him to pull the clutch in when you start up the bike in Neutral.

I have not heard that the clutch should be pulled in, does it alleviate any strain on the clutch basket when starting up?

Pull in the clutch, or it does not matter if it is ?

Always do, just habit just in case! Would not want to find out the hard way when starting that it was not in N.

I do sometimes but it is just by habit. pretty sure it really doesnt do anything but create space between your clutch discs. they spin regardless.

I don't think my 13RKC will start in gear with the clutch out...?

I am with the crowd, I have always started my bikes in neutral and the clutch pulled in, its habbit. Dunno if it will start with the clutch out in neutral or not never tried.

I seldom pull the clutch in while starting unless the bike is in gear. Since I am aware of whether the bike is in gear or not since I am generally rolling the bike out of the garage before starting and seldom leave the bike in gear when parked, I have never have seen the reason to do so though it is always one of the first steps taught in motorcycle safety courses.

Makes absolutely no difference on newer bikes with a nuetral safety switch as they will not start in gear unless the clutch is pulled in. Some earlier models such as my '02 will start in gear, clutch in or out.

As a habit always clutch in, safe with any mc and car. And it might make less stress on starter, less gears to turn,

I do the same. It's rare that I leave the bike parked in gear. I remember parking on a slope and left the bike in gear. Returned to the bike and burped the starter while in gear.

I just looked at the wife and said whoops! She chuckled and said are you rookie?
