Default Battery tenders, thoughts.....

Well my yellowbird's battery finally went to battery heaven, (or should I say hell) and had to replace. It did last about the average amount of time as the rest of batteries in other bikes before which for me is 4 1/2 to 5 years.

We all know that the HD factory batteries are not brand spanking new when you buy your bike from the dealer, nor brand new when you get a replacement.

The dealership wants like $180.00 - $190.00 for a "new" one. If there is a "Batteries +" or other battery store in your neck of the woods you can get the exact same battery as the factory for less, which a lot of forum members already know.

My local store has the "Deka" made battery X2 POWER AGM 30LA for $144.00 retail price, plus rebate of -$10.00, so the new price is $134.99.
24 months free replacement and 400 CCA. Also the "born on date" was March 2013.

Anyways, I started thinking about the battery tenders.

I for one keep it on my scooter and hooked up ALL the time when the motorcycle is in my garage, period! (mine is a HD brand battery tender)

What do you do, do you keep yours hooked up all the time, only in the winter months and off in the summer months?

Do you really think that these things help keep your batter life longer, shorter?

Building a new deck out back and needed to get out of the sun for a bit and it's too hot right for me right now to cool off on the scooter.

What's your thoughts or how do you use your batter tender?

Ride On,

YB

I only plug mine in if I am not going to ride it for a week or more.

If I'm not planning on riding my bike the next day it stays on the tender. If I'm riding daily I don't hook it up.

The bike I ride the most, never gets a tender. The others are all on tenders. It's just what I do..No rhyme nor reason!

Basically just during the winter, a good battery is good setting for a few weeks if I dont ride. Now if I run the stereo in the garage for an extended period of time I'll lug it in.

Got three bikes and three tenders. During the riding season I don't use them on the bike(s) I am using at the time, but I make a point of using them all, especially during the winter in my unheated garage. My longest life battery was eleven years, on one of my BMWs, shortest was just a few months, on a new Honda.

If I know I am not gonna ride for a day or two.......Tender gets hooked up to the bike. I use one for my lawn mower as well, have one I plug up to my pick up since it doesn't get driven all the time either.

I am a firm believer in the use and benefits of the battery tenders.

I have three tenders and move them around, tractor/mower/dirtbike/EG/RK/truck, Ones with less use get more tender time. Haven't bought a battery in any of them since the truck 8-9 years ago?

I have used tenders for years, in fact I date em so I can remember how long they've been in service and the oldest one I have was put in service in 2004. The outer casing was coming loose and I just super-glued it back on....still works fine.
