Default cigarette lighter

My brother gave me a cradle for gps or phone. He told me you couldn't plug into the cig lighter. What would be the reason for this. Is the lighter different than a car. Would like to plug phone in to keep it charged on long trips.

Thanks
Doc

Works fine, just make sure it doesn't hit your tank on tight left turns.....Been running my GPS like that for about 3 years.......

Been using the cig lighter for 4 years, only had 1 fuse blow. It was the PA fuse and i think I must have hit the tank like Glide said.

Running iPhone and GPS off the same cig plug. There are no issues. Works the same as in a cage.

Yup you can us it for your 12v source but you risk denting or scatching the left side of your tank especially if the plug is to long.

Use one of these, and you won't have any issues of it hitting the tank.
I use this to power my Garmin GPS, and can use it to charge the iPhone or iPod too.

This adapter mounts flush with the fairing surface.

Have charged my iPhone and my iPod there without any issues so I dont see why the GPS would be any different.

I plug my phone and radar detector into that socket all the time. The owners manual also say to NOT use it for that as it may damage it and the cigarette lighter may not heat up properly. I don't smoke so I don't care and HD is full of sh*t on that one.
