I was wondering when someone would introduce auto-dimming in vehicle lighting. Cool stuff... thanks for posting.

They are not currently available in the US because the federal laws require headlight to have the ability to manually switch between high and low and the Audi design take care of that without a manual override.

I learn something new every day. I thought the dimming switch was still foot actuated in 1952.

self -dimming was an option, the footswitch was still there.

my newest Cadillac ( 1972) still has footswitch along with the automatic controls.

My '72 Coupe de Ville had this option.

It also had fibre optics from each headlight & taillight to display units on top of the front fenders and in the rear deck to let you know when a bulb was burnt out.

i was looking at a mercedes a month or so ago and it had high beam headlights that would automatically graduate to low beam with oncoming traffic. it wasn't a full high to full low, it would gradually dim down to low... pretty cool actually
