I just just use a HD catalog or other shiny advertisement paper cut long enough to drip oil right before the left floor board and slide under the filter may be stuff little rag under the filter and never had a serious mess. But after draining the oil I re install the drain plug and run the engine for few seconds to get rid off another ounce or two of dirty oil and it also reduce the oil amount in the filter.

I stuff about a dozen or so paper towels all around that entire area and that absorbs most of it pretty well. Removing the oil filter is always at least a little messy, but not the total disaster of using nothing at all.

I guess I'm a cheap bastard...

I simply bent a bit of aluminum flashing I had in the shop, and cut it to fit under the filter. I also place a few shop rags under it to absorb any oil that gets past the home made filter funnel...

Uuuuggh...just did mine today, filter was a mess, kids running round and forgot that the oil pan drain blows past the bucket when on the jack stand for the first 10 - 15 seconds....all sorts of mess. Lesson learned: Don't try to squeeze in an oil change with 2 and 4 year olds running around!

just stuff a bunch of paper towels under the filter, loosen it and then spin it fast and tilt the filter up when you're pulling it off. Works for me.

I have had good luck with the HD filter funnel, mine stays in place pretty well once I drop the filter. Its a tight fit, but does the job. Very little oil spillage now, I also place a rag under the filter funnel just in case.
