Default Problem with fiberglass stretched fenders - Stars !!!

This last winter I purchased a Bad Dad fender overlay for my 07 Ultra. The quality of the Bad Dad product is incredible. I had to shape it a little for my 2-into-1 exhaust to match my saddle bag and it did not take much prep for my painter. Very good quality. After paint and install, I was and am totally happy with the outcome of the installed product.

The only problem is....

I do not have many miles on this mod and last weekend the wife and I went for an overnight trip to Milwaukee. On our way up from Chicago we hit something and we heard a slight sound at the back wheel. She asked what was that and I had no idea. I had not seen anything on the road. I paid no attention to it afterwards and totally forgot about the incident.

Today while washing the bike I noticed a 3" star near the bottom of the fender overlay. There is also a slight chip out of the paint. Whatever we hit, nicked the underside of the overlay and caused a pretty nice star in the paint. Looks like I have to visit my painter again this winter.

Oh well... you live and you learn... the next time I will invest in a steel stretched rear fender. Unless anyone else has suggestions???

many many years ago I had a step side pickup that had fiberglass fenders on it,they repaired them under warrenty two time because rocks hitting them underneath would cause stars in the paint.I sprayed the rubberized under coating on the underside and never had the problem again.

OP, That sucks about the fender, hopefully it doesn't cost to much to repair. Thanks, for this post, this information could be useful in the future.

+1 Had a couple street rods with glass fenders. Spray on undercoating in several layers.

Great thread! Rubberized undercoating sounds like the ticket. I don't think there are any ABS or steel fenders that have the look I want. I'd love to be wrong though if anybody would like to make suggestions...

Default Thanks for the undercoating idea!!!

I like that idea! I love the fender and the look, but don't like the stars/cracks. Unfortunately, since it's riding season I won't have a chance to make this fix until the winter. I guess I will have my painter use undercoating on the underside when he fixes the top side.

I will post my results next summer after I have some time on the repaired fender.

I love this forum... thanks for all the reply's !!!

Thanks Mike. I've actually already got Bad Dad's Shaved bags in the basement waiting. It's the fender I'm thinking about. I want the original Bad Dad stretched fender (not the Summit). FBI's seems to be the same and they are both figerglass. If anyone knows of a fender like that made of ABS or steel please let me know.
