Default Backrest loose

OK. I took my son out riding with me last week and we hit a bump and the backrest came loose. Thank god we were going slow or he might have toppled over. When I inspected the backrest I noticed that as I push down on the rear docking hardware it pulls the front docking hardware back almost 1/4 inch. I replaced the front docking hardware just in case and I still have problems. So I took the bike to the local dealer and spoke with the parts and service guys. They were great they even grabbed another backrest to see if possibly it was the wrong model. No dice the new one fit exactly the same as the one I currently have. They thought maybe the bike was in an accident. I asked the guy who owned it before me and he was unaware of an accident. This bike is a 2002 Electra Glide Standard. Short of me having custom made brackets 1/4 inch longer I don't know what to do. I won't let anyone ride on the back with the backrest on.
I am just looking to see if anyone has ever had this problem.

My issue is not with the backrest. It is with the docking hardware and the fact that the removable backrest will not lock into place.

I had the same experience with the passenger backrest on my ultra.
