Default HD paint price is ridiculous

So today, I go to HD and inquired about the price for Ember Red Sunglow paint..in case I wanted to buy it and have a guy paint it (there is a very well known guy who does all the local painting). Anyway, they looked into the book and it said I needed Candy Red @ $117.74, Ember Red @ $187.78 and Activator @ $55.95. They gave me all the part numbers as well. Sooooo, $362 for paint, then pay my guy to paint it versus just paying $549 (minus 10% military/retiree discount) for a painted fairing directly from HD. It really is a no-brainer, but I was really shocked at the cost of the paint. I'll be ordering my fairing...I'll pay a few more dollars, but it will be worth it to me. Any opinions or experiences from any one else who has one of those weird HD colors? A friend has a 2013 Candy Orange RG and he came across the same problem...but his fairing is $1,000 from factory...so he bought the paint and had it painted.

$150 to have mine painted Vivid Black, by the guy that does all of my dealerships paint repairs.

What quantity of paint are you buying? More than likely, it is way more than you will need. Try seeing if the person that does your dealerships paint will do yours too.

Did you ask that local painter for a price? I had a shop for many years, and could buy small amounts of PPG for small jobs like that. 3-6 ounces or so of color, plus the same amount of reducer for the colors. You didn't mention clearcoat, but that price is small when you buy it by the gallon, and use maybe a pint to do something the size of a fairing.

That isn't really that bad for paint, if you are around it often, you know how much paint has gone up in the last couple of years.
The problem is you would have a real rough time matching the paint on the faring anyway.

the original color for the 1971 we just did was $300 a quart for the red and $300 for a quart of the correct birch white plus shipping -- and my 48 Indian color was $500 a quart so i think harleys prices are in line with what most have voted for -- jz

So I just learned that I know nothing about paint prices! I truly didn't know that was cheap....but I think my biggest surprise was that I could just order a pre-painted fairing for just a little more money. There's a local guy who does the dealership's painting, but he doesn't have the ember red sunglow paint, so he would have to purchase it anyway. Those prices I quoted were for the minimal amount (qty) needed to do the fairing. It's all good tho -- It's why I own a Harley

I hear ya!!!! This Tequila Sunrise is stupid expensive too!!!! And I've read too many horror stories of people trying to wing it and match it.... That's why I just ordered my chopped tour pak straight from Lake Shore HD.... I just wouldn't save a dime trying to piece one together on my own....
