want to upgrade but not sure how far

Keep it simple. A cam upgrade and a good tune will give you a feel for what is available in the way of improved performance. As suggested a set of SE255s, SE204s, Redshift 525, Crane 300-2, S&S 551, Andrews 48 ad Woods 222 are all good options for a cam only upgrade.
At 60K miles, lifters should definitely be replaced. Upgrade the inner cam bearings and replace the cam chain tensioner shoes.
Having said that, before doing any of the above, check compression and if the news is not good, consider freshening up the top end with bore job to 103" and SE cast flat top pistons. If budget will allow, send the heads out for a street port job. Work around the cam of you choice.
If compression is looking good, a cam only upgrade might be just what you need and won't break the bank.

Fuel moto's 107" comes in at around 2K. (with them doing the build)
They have lots of proven builds, stand behind their work, and if I still had a 96" the 107 would have been a no brainer. You could piece meal something together for a grand or so, but at the end of the day spend the 2K, and ride it like you stole it till you want a new one years from now.
