Default RE: Road Glide history question

The FLT/C Tour Glide came out in 1980. The FXRT Sport Glide came out in 1982 and ran 'til 1992, they are based on the Low Rider chassis. You may have seen a 1986 FXRD "Grand Touring Edition" Harley made about 900 of them. They were priced about the same as the Electra Glide Classic and went over like a fart in a diver's helmet.
They are one of my favorite Harleys, I've had three including the elusive FXRD, currently I have a 1992 FXRT/RLE, Sport Glide with a factory side car. Pretty rare bike.

The 1980 FLT was also the first year for rubbermounted engine and the 5 speed transmission. H-D made the Tour Glide 1980 to 1996. They skipped 1997, and in 1998 introduced the Road Glide, a major refinement of the Tour Glide.

Just a side note, the FXRT faring was designed for the infamous Nova bike, a V4 water cooled machine that never saw production, so it was adapted to the FXR chassis.

They didn't refine the Tour Glide...it was already the superior machine in the stable. They just turned it into a RG so the newbies would bite on the new model, it's all in the name of sales. It's the same story today as it was in the 80's....most folks don't believe it's a Harley, and they're still the ugliest model in the lineup.

Most of them purchased as LAW enforcement bikes for a few years and the "emblem" you saw could have been from where the law enforcement decal was applied.

FXRT's and FXRD's were were made from 82 or 93 to the early 90's, I think. My dad had a FXRT and a FXRD and they were great handling bikes that is why the cops used em. Those are some rare bikes to see now a days.

Yes there is, this one:

Was presented as a gift by the employees of Harley Davidson to the guy (forgot his name) responsible for making the deal to buy back the Company from AMF. This was his bike.
