Default Speaker advice/opinions

I'm partial to Polk db series speakers but I see quite a few members on this forum like the J&M speakers.I'm looking at upgrading the audio system on my '09 FLHTCU. Had another bike with Polk speakers and they rocked, had real hard hitting bass and were crystal clear. Was wondering if anyone here has had tried both and if there's any noticable difference.

I have the J&M 7.25's

they are junk

the frequency response is uneven and the speakers easily distort.

I had asked J&M for detailed spec sheets* and they declined...so my fault for going ahead with the purchase.

I work with pro-audio and knew that without complete specifications I could be making a mistake.

Mike

* specifically speaker efficiency expressed in dB/1 watt/1 meter. and frequency response charts.

ps J&M are welcome to defend themselves....

Polk speakers are a good choice.
I have been using automotive speakers for years with no ill effects.
problem may be finding 2 ohm speakers.
However, you can use 4ohm speakers. You will lose some volume but not much.
You can go up in ohms but not down.

Check out the audio section. Polk mm651 are one of the hot setups. Not much good about J&M on there.

I replaced J&M Rockers in my RG with the MM651 Polks and now have the MM6501's and they both kill the Rockers. I am running a RF PBR300x2 and the mm6501's and can set the amp to HP and set the cross over to 50hz and run the bass on the head unit all the way up and have good bass and clear as a bell. With the rockers anything below 100hz they could not handle it.

Are you using the marine grade ones? Where or do you have to have adapters rings?

I probably would have gotten the Focals or Polks if my Titan IIs hadn't been discounted in a package with my Biketronics amp. My Standard J&M 71/4s distorted with just the Sony Head unit.

All the Polk speakers talked about on here are marine certified. The Polk MM651UM version, which is a 4 ohm marine-specific speaker, can't be used in the batwing fairing because the grill is integral to the design of the speaker and isn't removable. If you're using the HK only, the MM651 will work without issue, as they're a 2.7 ohm speaker.

If are using the MM651, you can source adapter rings through cycle visions or dragonfly. You can also find them on ebay, eglidegoodies and a bunch of other places. Once you have the adapter rings, it's a simple install of the speakers- the only extra step (besides removing the factory junk and installing the mounting ring then the speakers) is the crossovers for the MM651s are a separate box, so you have to mount them behind the horizontal brace. Extra couple minutes of work, and worth it. You'll also want to power those speakers with an amp...the HK deck is, umm, lacking power, to say the least! Check the Audio Forum on here- chock full of information, and the main Moderator in there, UltraNutz, is EXTREMELY helpful!
