Put 3 grand in it and be MILES ahead....(kilometers even). 96" engine....cams...want a better stereo?...and still got money to play with. Local Harley dealer has 2012 Ultras for 24,000 dollars (US).

My wife and I are getting an inheritance at the end of this year and I don't know whether I want to buy a new bike or put some money into this one to make sure all is tip top. I haven't checked the tensioners or critical fasteners yet but everything else is great.

My wife and I have test driven a 2013 Road Glide and a 2013 Ultra. I like them both, but don't find much difference between them and mine (HK Stereo). I actually think mine has more acceleration than the new ones.

So that's the deal. What are the pros and cons of buying new or keeping the bike I know?
I have an 03 and love it! Look at my sig to see what I did to make it way more fun! You can do a lot of mods to your current bike and keep your money in your pocket. The new bikes are not without issues.

You're in Canada for God's sake! If it gets hotter than you like install an oil cooler and a fan. ( but I doubt you'll need it.)

A final thought. I think that you have a better motorcycle than anything Harley has sold from 2007 to present. That's why I'm keeping mine (2000 RG,) forever.
I've done a lot of reading and read about the High Temperature Idle Control feature on these bikes, so I feel much better. I also feel much better that you've never heard of a pre-07 shutting down. It does get really hot here but this is the first summer with this bike so we'll see how it goes.

I wish they were that price here. Was looking at new Ultras and RK's again today at the stealership. All about 32K to start.

Jesus Christ, did Steven Hawking have to figure out your upgrades? I wouldn't even know where to start with all of that engine work. I'm sure your ride goes nice and fast though! I've gotten as far as looking at and pricing out the upgraded Tensioners with the oil cooler.

I started looking at cams but that's a whole new ball of wax apparently. Like I said, my bike goes fast enough for me right now. We'll see down the road though.

Well Steven was not available but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express.....lol!! Really though look at doing a big bore kit from Fuel Moto, Revolution Performance....there are lots of choices. When i got my bike in 03 it had the 95" kit with 203 cams and it ran pretty good. If I had your bike I would go with cylinders and pistons from Revolution Performance say out to 106". I would upgrade to the Screamin Eagle cam plate and new tensioners along with a cam of your choice. The reason I would do RevPerf cylinders is they run cooler than steel lined cylinders and run forged pistons. They have the kits for all of this. maybe 3-4K and you will have a great running engine along with reliability. I put Ohlin 3-3 shocks from Howard at Motorcycle Metal and Progressive Monotubes up front and the ride and handling are incredible. Much better than any new Harley. I am keeping my 03 until I can no longer ride. Been riding HD's for 35 years so I have had some experience with them as I have had a Shovel and Evo and now the TC. Of course you will get many different opinions here so your milage may vary..... But you will be $$ ahead by working with what you have now.

Why try to make a 10 year old bike like a new one when you got the cash to go get new with 0 miles on it? You won't get your money back out of the old bike if you tear into engine and trany apart. Most people don't want a bike that someone has tore apart, not knowing if it's right plus your only going to get book value when you do decide to trade. You won't get much if anything for your mods. If it were me, Id be shopping. New Road King msrp start at $20100. Some guys that say keep the old bike wish they had a new one. You will figure it out, take your time. Have fun looking.

You forget that he is in Canada and you are looking closer to $30000,00 Big difference... The new bikes aren't all that much better than the 03's. really , when you put them side by side they aren't that much difference..If you are planning on riding them for a long time it is an investment...Maintain it right and tweak a little stuff here n there and the bike will last a very long time...

I couldn't believe that Canada's bike were $10,000 more than US. So I Googled a Canadian dealer, first one that popped up had a 13 RK for only $400 more than US??

Do they tax ya 9 grand or something or they just get that much more than MSRP because of supply??

Long thread, lol. If your bike has never left you stranded and has been good to you, why get rid of her? I would invest in what you have and save the rest of your money for a rainy day if you do get the urge to trade down the road.

Have a peek at my local dealer. You can't get a touring for under 25K. Not like it really matters I guess, but it is still a buttload of money.
