Ive heard of people having issues at as little as 5,000 miles and as high as 70,000 miles. If you know how to inspect them, I'd check them at your next oil change/service. I plan on inspecting them at 10,000 then 15,000. If at 15,000 they are ok, I will soon afterward change over to hydraulic cam tensioners and the better oil pump.
Did mine at a little over 19k, wanted to done just for a piece of mind.
Once I saw the tensioners when he returned my parts, I am very glad I did it. There wasnt much left on the pads and looked like a few small chunks missing.
Haven't checked mine yet and I am at 50,000. Bought it used last spring and hoping the dealer had them inspected and changed out if it was necessary. Here this week I am planing on changing all oils and have a look.
We had our local shop look at my wife's and brother-in-laws bikes my wife has a 2005 deluxe with 44,000 miles they had 3/4 pad left, the other bike was a 2003 ultra with 38,000 miles on it the outer was about half gone and the inner was down to the metal caught just in time. Both bikes now have the full roller kit installed should not have to worry about both of them for a very long time now.
What is it-just a matter of taking the cam chest cover off and inspecting them (not pulling cam(s) w/a small mirror-if ok.,reinstall cover w/new gasket?
That's about right. May need some light to see back one clearly. In my experience back one seems to go first. Dealer will tell ya every 30K for inspection. Some bikes you have to drop the front pipe. Pretty easy. Of course more work if need to replace. Make sure to inspect cam chest for pieces of the pads. The pieces plug the oil pump.
Had mine looked at 52,000 miles. Inner good and rear just starting to wear. Replaced the rear and good to go. Great idea to have them checked, but they don't always wear down.
