Default Buying a 99' Road King

Hey everyone,

Newbie hear. Looking to get back in the saddle after a 19 year absence. Been looking at Road Kings and found a decent deal but have a few questions. My budget is small ($8,000 to $9,000) since I have 2 kids in college so I'm targeting an older RK. I found a 99' Road King Classic for $8,200 but I have concerns regarding the following:

  • Cam Bearing: How bad is this issue? Is there any truth that if the bearing fails H-D will pay for the repair?
  • Fuel Injection: How bad is the FI on this year? I hear stories about converting to a carb because of some issues. What are the issues? Has anyone found zero problem with theirs?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

That price seems high. At least for Colorado. There are a ton of that era RK's under that price here. The MM EFI is like women in general; yours could be a real gem, be great for most of the relationship and then one day -BAM!- turn on you like a pit bull, or just be a real bitch right from the get-go. Mine is like my wife... takes a while to wake up, but then does a good job without too much attitude. So, if you're willing to put a little effort into the relationship, and you have a good conversation with the previous owner so you know her idiosyncrasies, you should be fine. It's when you start trying to change her is when she gets tempermental (the bike, not the woman... well... never mind )!

one of the last evo's. nice man. make sure you get one with a carb.

edit: & look for lowest miles you can, but not too low. work on around 1000 or a bit less for each year old.

Thanks for the info Yzergod. Good to know about the FI. Where are all these better deals in Colorado you speak of? I can't find any RK under 10 in that state.

BTW Grew up in the 4 corners and still have family there so I have looked around Durango and Farmington.

OP there are a few threads on 99's do a quick search.

aside for the efi, the cam bearing, the cam tensioners and on pre Oct 1998 production the pinion bearing is are a real concern.

that is also the final year for the single piston brakes.

a 2003 or newer would be a better bike.

on an evo motor w/carb.

the pricing for that seems way out of line-

saw this in PHX for comparo:

Be patient and search every day, you will find a great bike for your price. I picked my 04 with 17,900 miles for 7700. There are great deals to be had.
