I have a dyna but want a road king as well. The age would not put me off as long as the bike was worth the asking price. The only way to is to track the adds and look at as many bikes as you can before you fall for the one that you feel that you have to take home with you. When you talk about problems in the cam chest, the ones that shreaded the tensioners will have been sorted a long time ago but ask the question to see if the tensioners been checked relative to the miles. If all sounds good with the motor put some money by to check for wear and replacement. That goes for any of the older bikes. I like older bikes don't let age put you off but buying.

Looks like I should get to No Cal to get my ride. Thanks for the links Bigheadted. Issue is I would be out about $1,000 making the trip out there to see the bikes and ride one back.

Could pay to have it shipped back but not too found of buying a bike without seeing it in person and riding it first.

 

I found a local 2002 Heritage with only 22,000 miles and the bike looks sharp. He is only asking $7,900 which is a steal out here so may end up on a soft tail. Prefer the Road King but wouldn't pass up a good deal on a Heritage.

 

good to hear mate. if you dont buy the heritage then dont bother with the 99 rk, go the last evo model. as stated earlier in thread by the other fella, it means you would have to look at 98 rk's instead. ..... or get your 02 as best of the early tc models. good luck with whatever you end up. you will be stoked either way.

 

I bought a 99 EG last June with 38k on it for $8k, beautiful bike. Had the tensioners, lifters, cam bearings changed, and put SE 204 cams in. Just turned 51k this past weekend with no problems at all, mine is a carb, is simple and easy to work on, not going to buy a new one, just fix it when it needs it, make it into what I want and keep it a long time.

 

If the cam bearing goes, the windor where HD will repair it at no cost has closed. I believe back in 2004. I got mine done in 2003 on my '99 and it was paid for, dealer told me I just made it before the recall expires.

With that said my '99 has been a reliable strong running bike.
