THINKING OF BUYING PCIII? NOTICE TO 06-07 READ THIS FIRST!

Maybe you have read the 8 pages about the slow start up using the Dynojet Powercommander known as the PCIII on most 06 and every 07 with EFI, maybe not. If you are considering using one please read what Dynojet has answered us who have inquired about this problem. Be advised your bike will no longer start crisp as it does once you install this product. Seems dynojet has no fix and do not anticipate one in the near future. They also are saying to do a start up procedure not reccomended by Harley. With as many who might want to use the PCIII,I feel all should know of this issue before you buy not after.
email recieved from Dynojet and posted in the slow start thread by baggerdave(thanks!);
This is a known issue on the 06-07 models. The problem is that in 06 Harley changed the ECM which affected the way the PCIII gets its power. As you may have noticed when you turn the ignition on the lights on the PCIII will come on and then go off. The Power Commander gets its power from the fuel pump circuit so while you hear the fuel pump cycling the PCIII is powered up. Many customers will turn the key on, wait for the fuel pump to stop cycling and then hit their starter button. Since the PCIII is now powered down when you hit the starter button it takes a couple seconds for the ECM to give power to the PCIII which causes the delay in the starting. If you were to hit the starter button immediately after the key is turned on then the bike will fire right up as normal.
At this time we do not have a fix for the delay. I have been riding our 07 Touring model around for over the last month and have been starting it in this manner without any issues. If you have any other questions please let us know. Thanks.

My question is, are you looking for a fix for this problem?
We are looking into it. No estimate as to when this may happen though. Thanks.

Yeah, it's a pain in the butt and I wonder how bad it is to start before the fuel pump is done cycling. Currently I just put up with the slow start. I may, in the future, change out from PCIII, depending, mainly because of the stutter I have when I crank the throttle from idle.
But it's hard to argue with the more power and better gas mileage I'm getting now. I'm sure SERT could do the same for me, though...
Isn't technology great?!

I don't get it. If this was for the 07's maybe, but this is just coming out now about 06's with slow starts? This has been going on since the first '06's had the PCIII's installed? I'm not disputing your info, just find it strange it's coming out now about the '06's. I guess I'm glad I went with the SERT.

I just installed mine last night. I was a little worried after readingthe slow start postings. Mine now starts on the second revolution rather than the first. In factit started on about half a revolution from thefactory. Now it actually makes a full turn before starting,I see no big deal with it.

The reason, it would cost them money to redesign a PCIII to work correctly on only 06 and 07 and maybe 08. The current model of PCIII is the same one that was introduced in 2001 for the 2002 model.

quote:
I found the Tech Tip. It was from January, 2001. Here's the part about the
engine light and fuel pump, with regards to police bikes:
======================
Some Police Departments have expressed concerns regarding the starting
process on fuel injected motorcycles. There is a mistaken impression they
must wait for the fuel pump to shut off and the check engine light to turn
off before starting the engine. This may have an affect on how soon they can
respond to certain situations.
When the ignition switch is turned on, the fuel pump relay is energized and
the check engine light is lit for about 4 seconds. If the ECM does not
receive a crank sensor signal within this 4 seconds, the power is removed
from the relay until a crank signal is received. If the ECM receives a crank
signal during the first 4 seconds after key on, the ECM will continue to
supply power to the fuel pump relay and allow the vehicle to start
immediately. There will be no adverse affects to turning the ignition on and
immediately starting any fuel injected vehicle.
Please explain this to all your local Police Department Motor Officers to
make them feel comfortable to respond at a moment's notice as the need
arises.
