Guess there are lots of opinions about how a certain style of bike should look? Customization is used to make 1. the bike look unique, and or 2. change to the look in style, characteristic, etc.
I am pretty sure that all s.g.s do not have to be a muscle car version of baggers. This old school look is great. I am thinking of taking a set of tins and doing the old AMF throwback stipes. Do your own thing. If they don't like it, then they don't have to ride it.

The orange/black it a better look to me, and not just because of the color combo (although I prefer that to the red/white)...
I like the way the orange/black carried the color scheme to the fairing and front fender as well, it looks more integrated than the red/white just on the tank/bags/sidecovers.
Mine's still new enough that I haven't decided if I want to paint it, but I probably will eventually...because there ARE a lot of plain SGs out there.
