I'm going to the darkside. I think there is a lot of validity in NOT having to change rear tires every 2nd oil change. BEFORE i get flamed...I would request that you ONLY speak from experience. That means... If you have tried it... You have an opinion...If you havent tried it then you DON"T have an opinion on something that you know nothing about. If you have tried it and went back... I would especially like to hear from you!!
I am weighing ALL options!

how many miles so you have on the bike?
How do you feel about how the OEM tires deal with your riding style and the roads?

If you like them.... stick with them.....

Avons are more grippy, but don't last
Metzlers are more grippy, but lasted (for me) about the same as the OEM 402 (8k)
Dunlop Elite-3 gripped better, and lasted for 12-13K for me...

I've sung the E-3 praises for years... great tires, but on a whim, I tooka chance on the Commander II from Michelin.
I got over 15k on the C-II before I replaced the rear... didn't NEED to... maybe left 2k on the table... maybe more... I doubt less...I was there, they were in stock...and the price was right.

Car tires are an option... but not for me..

as always
YOUR miles may vary

Check out the new Metzeler ME-888 at Dennis Kirk, In your size, $139 + $5 shipping. Also the Michelin Commander II, or the bias Dunlop Elite 3. All of these are good as long as WW's are not needed. Dennis Kirk and Jake Wilson have low tire prices most often. The 888 MU85x16 rated at 920lbs load capacity.

Default 2005 Ultra rear tires size.

I have the Micheln Commander II on the front of my 05 ultra. Love it. Its time to replace the rear. Will a 140/90B 16 fit?? or do in have to go with the 130/90B 16.
My bike has stock cast wheels, is there a clearance issue with the 140'S.

Thanks

Hey Guys, JMTC,
I liked the stock D407, 180/65 16 that came on the rear of my 2010 FLHTK.
Had 15000 miles on it and could have ridden more. Good grip and handling. But since I am in Korea it is hard to get the stock tire here without paying double. They also ripped the side wall of my front when shipped. So I ordered Metz 880 front and rear. Did not like the grip on the Metz but it did last 13000 miles. I am trying Dunlop Elite for the rear now. Just ordered it. Will give an update when I get some miles on it.
Like I said just my two cents.

Same here! Cobras have recently replaced Venoms and I have a nice fresh one on the front.

I run Metzler 880's. Always have, probably always will. Always get 10k plus out of them on the rear. Buddy of mine just put on the new 888's. Am going to watch how his mileage goes and how the performance is
