Anyone that has done engine mods for increased power please chime in!
So I've been consulting with various indy's in my area, as well a few a little farther out by phone. That's in addition to reading till my eyes bleed on here.
I want to get more power out of my 96. So I was all set to do a FM107 this coming winter. However one of my good friends, (forum member BrownSanta) was going to do the same on his 103, but ended up going with Woods 222 Cams, a SE clutch plate, SE High flow oil pump, and his powervision. He says its was a big improvement but now he was to change out the cams to Woods 555's because they are a little more snotty than the 222's.
One trusted indy is telling me that I don't need to go big bore, that I can wake up my 96 with a set of W555's, a Fueling cam plate, compensator sprocket adjustment, adjustable push rods, head porting, Thundermax + dyno tune. He also recommended I change my true duals to power duals. He recommended I do all this BEFORE I do a big bore kit as he said I might not want to bother cause Ill be happy with the above...He did suggest that if I did go big bore to do a 107.
Another indy said I should pass on the 107, do a Hot HD 103 build, jugs, pistons, with S&S 570 cams, adjustable pushrods, head porting, SE Clutch plate, SE high flow oil pump, SE Clutch diaphragm, ditch the true duals and get power duals, and a dyno tune.
Third indy opinion was do a S&S 117 soup to nuts...welded crank, jugs, pistons, everything already listed and then some. I don't think I want to go this route at all. Its expensive, time consuming, and may/may not have reliability issues.
Overall I'm not trying to win any races. I just want some more "GIDDY-UP." I want more power off the line, and when I'm cruising over 70mph I want to be able to downshift to 5th and goose it and actually have some serious passing power.
Thoughts?

Ask your bud if can swap bikes for a short ride and see if just the cams in his bike are enough giddy up for you. If that's not enough the 107 would be more than enough if your not looking for a hot rod.
Edit. I have the 96 with woods 555 and feel like the bottom end is a little soft but up around 2800-3000 rpm it takes off.

Everything I've read and everything I've been told is that you don't need to weld the crank for a 107 build. I'd really like to avoid cracking the case at all costs. Which is another reason why I don't want to go and do a 120r or 117.

Cams are easy, if you are pulling heads than might as well do a BB kit of your choice. But just cam alone will make a huge difference and if your buddy is pulling his 222 give him a case of beer and throw those in your bike with some adjustable push rods and leave the topend intact till you really decide what it is you want. What tuner are you running?

+1, I agree with this answer most, do the cams first, if that's good enough ok, if not I'd go to a 107 before a 103, about the same cost, why not get all you can. I had a 96 also, I now have a 107 with 570 cams, whole different bike.
