Tap it with a rubber mallet.

Put 2 bolts in the cover just barly in. Take a clean rad and grab a rubber hamer and give the cover a love tap. The screws are so the cover doesnt hit the ground when it pops off.

And when it comes loose, try to remove the gasket with it in one piece. Might save you from having to scrape it off later.

Tap it? This coming from the guy that used a 5 lb rubber mallet and wailed the ever luvin' chit outta Petemac's cover? And then went to a piece of 2x4 to be able to get a better swing with the mallet? Do I need to show the pics?

thanks guys. already tried the rubber mallet on all sides. if i hit it much harder i might crack it. they must use some serious gasket cement at the factory.

Seriously, there is no gasket cement used at all. With 10 bolts holding it on and the heat that is generated, the gasket creates a damn good seal. You sometimes really do have to wail on it.

I concur that the rubber mallet is the first choice, but if that doesn't work a wide (one inch or so), thin bladed, flat scraper or putty knife carefully placed between the cover and case and tapped with a hammer will do it.

The two bolt idea is a good one to keep from dropping the cover when it breaks loose.
