The Tallboy for the pre-09 bikes is significantly different from the Tallboy for the '09 and later frames. As you said, the older Tallboy moves you back and up. The newer ones just move you back 2".

I have the newer style on my '11, have put 18,000 miles on it and find it to be very comfortable. (I'm 6'2" 215) It is very similar to the Sundowner that I had on my Sportster.

 

Both local dealers here only have the try before you on '08 and newer.

I have one on my 2012 FLHR, back two inches up nothing. It's pretty comfortable to me. I'm 6'2

 

I put the Tallboy seat on my '12 FLHTK. I felt it put me in a much better sitting position but then it became a reach for the handle bars. Put on Khrome Werks 2+2 handle bars and that solved that, not to mention the very much improved hand/wrist position. I then moved the tour pak back a couple of inches to give passenger some space. Over all i am very happy with the ride and comfort now.

 

I just put a Tallboy on a 08 Ultra w/sidecar. Back 2 inches and same height as stock or a Mustang Sport Tourer seat. My problem with both stock and Mustang were not enough arm stretch and wrist limitations. Getting the backrest to work with tallboy is a challenge. Ended up using a dremel to modify seat pan to position the receiver so it would accept backrest pad and post. The MOCO backrest never did work but with help Mustang feels pretty good. I'm 5'10 218 and the extra arm stretch really feels nice.

 

I bought a Mustang Vintage for the backrest and convenience of a removable passenger seat. Sat me higher than the Sundowner that i had. Ended up with a Corbin solo. Probably doesnt have 200 miles on it, let me know if your interested (pics and part numbers). Have the rear seat and mounting nuts also, was on a 2001. FWIW Corbin will make you a seat to your specs also, 2" up 1" back etc. whatever you need. And I believe at no extra cost.

 

I'm only 6ft2 but I hated my tallboy seat, felt like I was "above" the bike, I knew I wanted room to move back but not up. I ended up picking up a badlander and I am very happy with it. Wide lots of room to move without being pushed up onto the tank.

A lot of shops still do the demo seat thing, no reason for a shop not to let you try one out. Could even ask if they could pull a tallboy off a used bike if they don't want to use a "new seat".

 

I am 6'5" 330 and my tallboy is much better than stock, though not perfect. As previously stated, the extra real estate provided for you is at the expense of your partner. My quest for a better seat will likely continue.
