2012 Ultra Limited Charging issues
#21
I joined this forum looking for this exact information. Thank you. It is a hard pill to swallow because I absolutely love my FLTRX 103. My question is this: if it is a voltage regulator problem, why does it only happen after the engine heats up and/or in extremely hot weather?
In the morning the bike charges just fine all the way to work. After work, it stops charging intermitently on the way home.

HD says my VIN isnt part of the recall
Okay, so I follow the cyclefish recall direction, register on H-D home page for recalls. They verified my VIN, says no open or closed recalls for my bike. It was purchased February 2012, first problem August 2012, problem stopped until last week. If I have to remove the V/R and look for the part number and serial number on the UNDERSIDE just to find out if it is part of the "bad batch" why can't I just take the V/R into the dealership and trade it for a "good" one instead of dropping it off for a week and having to find a ride or cab back and forth to the dealer? Sounds reasonable to me.

Quick Survey of affected owners
Thanks for the responses, I appreciate it. I do have one question, my V/R had the optional oil cooler mounted in front of it. Do all those who have actually experienced the problem have the optional oil cooler? it does restrict airflow to the V/R, and it does get HOT ( don't ask how I learned that ). Wondering if they were actually bad V/R units or if mounting that oil cooler in front of it made an otherwise OK unit go bad?
Just a thought. This is my first FL bike. My two previous were a springer and a fatboy.

HD Website
There's a link on Harley's web site, I think My Bike, where you can register your bike and then go in to the bike's profile. The VR campaign wasn't a Recall but a Product Information. As I recall, you have to scroll to the bottom of the profile page to see Product Informations outstanding. Try it and double check the info you're getting from dealer. Also, your VR's part number and mfg. info is on the left side of the unit. Mfg info is ww/yy....week number and year. You can see it kneeling down with a flashlight if you're in the garage. Finally, there's Harley's service bulletin you can search for here which shows the bad range of VR's. That's how I found mine.
