Default Misfire when wet caused by fuel injector plug wiring

JUst putting this up for future reference if someone does a search for bike misfiring in the rain. My 07 Touring bike with 55,000 miles has had an intermittent misfire for about a year starting when it sat outside overnight in a deluge to rival Noah's flood. It would go away for a while but i noticed it would do it whenever i was riding in the rain. Figured it was ignition so i replaced the plug wires. Nothing. It was throwing no trouble codes the whole time except incomplete combustion. Duh, i knew that. I checked all the ignition wiring and plugs and found nothing. I started the bike and had someone squirt water on the coil and all the ignition wiring. Nothing. Recently i rode in the rain for 350 miles and the bike almost stopped running it was missing so bad. When i would gas it the miss would go away. That was the Aha! moment that i realized it might not be the igniton so i took the tank off today to check the fuel injector wiring. After disconnecting all the plugs what i found upon careful inspection was that one little wire on each plug had chaffed against the hard plastic part of the fuel injector plugs down to where the bare wire was showing slightly on both front and rear. The fix was to coat the upper part of the plugs and wiring with clear RTV silicone. It's outside drying now but i am sure i found the problem and the fix. This might help someone to diagnose a misfire. These little bare spots were not visible without unplugging the injectors, and even then i had to look hard with a little shop flashlight so they would be easy to look over. Chances are if one Harley had this problem some more have or will have it also.

Good info. Im going to add braided covers to all the wirring to my throttle body before I assemble my engine. Your issue just further re enforces my thought for doing this.

Very nice tidbit of information. Thanks for sharing that truckerdave. I hope you put several key search words in the tag line. This will help many. I forgot to do this early on, but soon realized the error of my way. This helps tremendously in the search for threads of interest. I have about a fifty-fifty ratio of finding what I'm looking for through the search feature. I think it's due to not knowing who put what wording in a tag line, or not enough reference words. Others seam to be able to find and post links to threads which the other person could not find through their search. Odd isn't it.
I hope those who read this thread and my post keep this in mind in the future.
Well, chores are mounting, time to hit the road! Thanks for allowing me to ad my $0.02 worth. Sometimes it helps! (-:

Yeah i tried to word the thread tagline so if someone had a misfire when wet and searched, it would come up. I have had problems and searched. Usually someone has had the same problem and figured out how to fix it. Who knew if you have an 07-earlier touring bike with stock head pipes and your left muffler is squeaking, the rear head pipe is cracked. I found that on here and sure enough it was.

I could only add two tags at the bottom. Add whatever you think will attract someone.

Just adding an update. I decided to see if i could find the replacement plugs with pigtails so i could splice it into the wiring harness and fix it back to stock without any "redneck engineering" involved. Nothing is available from HD except the replacement plug components. I found the replacement plugs with short pigtails available from many sources including ebay($8 each). Turns out they are standard Bosch EV6 connectors which come on many late model cars and identical to the OEM plugs.
