Spring Break - 1,000 Mile Service - Thanks Dad!
By day I'm a high school woodworking drafting teacher. To and from work and any other chance I get when the weather is fit, I'm out riding my Road King.
My last ride of the season in 2012 was December 2nd. After more than 3 months without a ride I finally got to ride last Friday to work. I've had the week off this week and my main goal was to get Annie in for her 1,000 mile service. Well the weather man and all of the forces that be did everything to stop me.
I had 731 miles on Annie Tuesday morning. After a 230 mile ride straight west on Rt. 136 to a little town called Table Grove, Illinois, and back I had 961 miles on her. The temperature Tuesday was 24-41 degrees with West winds at 15-25 mph. Now you can see why I went straight west. I figured if I could cut right in the teeth of that wind for half the trip, the ride home would be a breeze! I was right because when I turned around and headed east the sails were up and it was like riding a glider home.
This morning with the temperature at 15 degrees with a 5 mph WNW breeze I headed to Decatur to get my service done. I'm proud to say that I rolled into Coziahr HD with 1,002 miles on the odometer. More importantly I had the ride of my life Tuesday and today. I rode in conditions that were a challenge but nothing that I couldn't handle. I was thinking about my Dad when I was riding. He set a great example for me and my brother to meet challenges head on and when the going gets tough the tough get going. It was a year ago this past Monday that Dad passed away. He never got to ride on my bike when he was alive, but I like to think he was there with me this week!
