Default Problem with my oil gauge.

New to this forum. Thanks for having me. I'll start from the top.
I have 2001 FLHTC (80000mi). I pulled the inner fairing apart to replace the radio, replace the support brackets, paint the inner fairing. I also did some work on the primary drive, new stator, regulator, seals , some bearings clutch pack, belt. And replaced the oil lines for the oil cooler.
After I got it all back together ever thing works but the oil gauge. It's not a light but a gauge mounted in the fairing. I replaced the switch mounted in front of the motor by the rear master cylinder. And I have also replaced the gauge, both brand new. I removed the switch and tested for oil pressure and I have good oil pessure. I tested the wire with a ohm meter from the swicth to a connector under the right side cover. Which tested ok and the the fuse is ok. The light comes on but the needle does not move.
On the back of the gauge , the plug that plugs into the gauge there is a black wire and a orange wire. on the orange wire I get 12 volts and on the black wire I get 7.5 ohms when the bike is running.
Is there a way I can test the gauge it self.
This one has really got me stumped
Could use some help.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum. So if you replaced the gauge and everything checks out, just hook the old gauge up and see if it registers oil pressure. If that doesn't work re-install the old sending unit. You don't have to install them in the fairing, just hook it up. If it registers then you have a bad replacement. I can't imagine this being the case, but anything is possible. Why did you replace the gauge in the first place and why did you go back with the stock gauge? I would have put a gauge that was easier read in its place.

WAG--perhaps you used the voltmeter connector on the oil gauge and vice versa.

If you have the service manual you can check the wire colors.

Harleypingman nailed it.. You have the wrong connector on it....you have the Volt gauge connector on the Oil Press gauge.
There should be 3 wires going to the oil gauge. look for a 3 wire connector with a green wire.. that's the oil pressure connector.. the green wire is from the sending unit.

There should be two connectors that go to this if it still has the original wiring. There is a two blade connector that has an orange and a black wire for the gauge lamp plus a three blade connector that has an orange, black, and on my '09 bn/gn wire. Now on an '01 it might not be brown with a green stripe, but it could be. Since you've got lights that would tell me you've connected that connector, but you need to connect the three blade also.

On my 06 the black and orange wires are for the light. Like the others said there should be a three wire plug from the sending unit.

Default Problem solved

That's it. I had the volt meter and the oil pressure gauge wires crossed.
Feeling a little humble right know. Thanks for the help, it was a quick fix.

Glad it's fixed.

FWIW, most of the help threads would' t appear if the owner had the HD service manual. In your case, you could look at the comprehensive wiring diagrams and learned that the oil gauge uses three wires and found your mistake.
