Default RE: Smells like burning oil?

I have a similar oil "smell" issue, but different.
I just changed fluids. All Mobil 1 synthetic. 15w50 in the crankcase, 20w40 vtwin in the primary and 75w140 in the transmission.
When the bike reaches operatng temp, I can smell the gear grease. No leaks
Never happened before. Prior to this change, I always used the HD syn 3.
This fluid change was at 17,000 miles on this 06 Ultra.
I did my own change at 15,000 and this one. All other were done by the dealer.

Whats up? Or is smelling hot gear lube normal?

I don't think you should be smelling anything other than the Spring flowers unless your riding an old leaking Panhead or Knuckle

had wondered about the leak..... Glad everything has worked out. Noses and eyeballs... two of the best service tools available.

Good to hear everything worked out for you.

There is a service bulletin on how to determin if the valve seals are bad. Consumption test is the first step. Unless the valve seals are missing you should not smell burning oil. They take about 10,000 miles to get really bad.

Everyone iscorrect the tech's statement on oil is 100% BS.

I've noticed the same "gear oil smell" since changing to Mobil 1 a few yrs back. I use the 75w90 Mobil 1 in the trans. No leaks, but a slight smell after shutting off in the garage. I changed to all Mobil 1 at 10,000 miles,( 20w50 in engine and primary)now have 44,000 miles on my '01 Dyna.
