I feel certain the brand and weight of oil you are running isn't the root of your problem.

I went for a ride Saturday and my eyes were stinging from the oil smell it was so bad. So I stopped at the Dealer to have it looked at. Tech said, "yeah, it's not right" Said there was a problem with the valves on some 06's and to bring it in Wednesday and they would check it out. Also said that the synthetic oil is crap for the mild climate in Ca. and that it would be better to run 50 wt. On Wed. they are going to replace the synthetic with 50 wt. while it's there for no charge. We'll see what happens.
The valve seals aremore likely the culprit.
The statement about synthetic oil is crap, the statement that is, not the oil.
You can get synthetic in any weight that you can get petroleum oil in, maybe even more.
Synthetic oil will not, on their own, cause a leak, internal or external.

Whether it better than petroleum oilor not is a long and drawn out debate that has been answered in my mind years ago.

I agree, type oil nor the viscosity would cause the problem you have.

At the very least you'd have to say that a viscocity of 50 weight is the same in syn or fossil.

I agree, probably valves seals, from what i've read on the Forums. And I was quoting the Tech about the oil. I haven't read up on the oil debate or formed an opinion yet.

Did you pull the plugs and have a look see? If the valve seals are leaking it has nothing to do with the damn oil. Oil is meant to lubricate moving parts to reduce friction, not to seal things.

You know, I think the problem is the valve seals, but the tolerances between the valves and the guides must be pretty darn loose in these engines....I don't run any valve seals on purpose on the exhaust valves in my Ironhead. It just puffs a little at idle and gives off a puff at gear changes. It doesn't use a measurabe amount of oil between changes.

I may be a mechanical retard, but I do know that oil is NOT a sealant. What the Tech said was, " in our climate the synthetic is so thin that it flows through the seals" His words not mine, and I didn't say I agree with it.

Iamswutiams,

LMAO, but a true mechanical 'wrenching challenged' individual might not fully understand the nuances of lubrication. I feel absolutely qualified to define limited skills and abilities, ergo I'm not going down the which oil is... lane either.

Good luck and I think you have you consumption issues addressed. Got my oil dripped all over my left pipe at a service interval and do know what the aroma is like. When you get it back, take the time to really clean the undercarriage, and begin a short vigil.
