I had the same problem. Instructions suck. I was glad to find Dew's write up. Left pipe is too close to my thigh though.

 

I wish the left pipe was done a little better as well. My lower thigh should not be touching the pipe when trying to back the bike up. I'm 6 foot, if not an inch more, so I don't struggle with height. I removed the heat shield, loosened everything up, and tried to get it closer. I actually did get it a lot closer but, with everything tightened I can still (barely) get a finger between the pipe and the side cover. I just don't see that it can get any closer.

Also, the heat shield coverage stinks. It is great on the right. Hell, I'll go so far as to say the right is perfect. Everything about the right side is perfect. But the left? I can see the pipe under the shield from the top AND the bottom. "Full-coverage heat shields". Yeah right. Only if that means enough to keep me from getting burnt. If full coverage means enough to hide the pipe they are pretty far off.
