well...biketronics is one place to look.
the CD generation is dead- done. Finding cd's is tough, it is not like best buy or walmart carry anything but the top 10- which are all "acts" that only a 9 year old has heard of.
How about an mp3 player ? I use an ipod touch.
with the ipod touch I can carry about 50,000 songs, get email, browse the internet and get maps and directions ( wifi like at mcdonalds when touring).
an mp3 player can easily be plumbed into your stock radio with an FM Modulator - the same type of device to hook up an XM/sirius radio.
there is a box with plugs into your stereo antenna connector, the stock antenna plugs into the box.
The mp3 player is plugged into the box.
when you want mp3's you turn on the box- which will play the music on your radio, just dial up the FM to the frequency selected on the box.
an FM Modulator will cost under $100 ( maybe $60?)
this is not the same as a plug in FM transmitter... those things always crap out and have static.
I installed XM on my '95 FLHTC ( same radio as yours) and when I wanted mp3's just unplugged the XM and plugged the cable into the ipod.
I installed the modulator just at the bottom left of the fairing so I could reach in and change frequency if I needed to
or you can get a $10 cassette adapter- they work pretty good.
Radio shack should have, if they don't PM me, I got a bunch in my garage ( from all the XM radios in my cars and bike)

I'm not one who takes my stuff to people, unless they can do the job faster, cleaner and not for an arm.
I went through the same dilemma as you are going through. I went to a high-end audio shop, that works on expensive cars. I bought all of the components on amazon at a good price. I went with a JVC unit with Bluetooth
Made an appointment, and waited while they did the install. It took them 1.5 hours. The only "shop" parts I paid for is wire and the controller. They used a generic controller that they use on all of the car installs. They hooked it up, then married it to my hand controls with a programmer unit. It cost me 80 bucks, plus 130 for labor.
I now have a badass system for 1/2 what a plug-and-play would have cost me. I'm a firm believer that any product that is made for a "bike" costs more than it should. Even though I use it - motorcycle oil is one good example.
Good luck and I'm sure that you will love what ever stereo system that you choose.

Im in the same place you are (91 flhtcu). Just pulled my outer fairing tonight. How is the sound and static from the FM Modulator? I called biketronics a while back and they said to get the plug-in-play kit for my bike I would have to buy a stereo, speaker, wiring kit for around $530. One factory plug does have to be reused due no longer made. I love my tunes, but not sure I love them that much! If the fm modulator works and sounds good with not messing around, that will be the way to go!

...well I'm in the music business.
I used the fm modulator for my XM and ipod for about 8 years- at which point I sold the 1995.
good clear sound but it CAN be affected by nearby radio stations broadcasting on the frequency you have selected.
that is why it is good to buy a unit with more than 1 freq ( the one I saw at BB had 2), the one from XM/ Delphi had 3.
as noted above I mounted it where I could reach the freq select switch while riding.
the freq that worked best for me in PHX, didn;t work for me in LA- and vice versa...I'd hit the switch in Redlands

similar to- but that unit appears to be mono, not stereo.
and it does not appear to have selectable frequency
