one of the dealers I used to use worked that way, but I know this is how ours is. They are some of the few of our employees that are not commission.

i don't understand the question.. most of the exhaust comes out of the rite side. it will always have more soot build up. you could plug the left side off, and not notice much of a difference.
the last shop i worked at, everyone in service was paid hourly, except for the head tech. he liked to talk and screw off, they made him salary trying to get him to get more work done. i was the new guy, i usually brought home more money then him. he would always hold his check up in the air to look at it, i had the next bay.
the shop before that, me and the other tech were the wrench and writer. everyone there was hourly.

Get a piece of 3/8" or 1/2" rubber hose about 1 ft. long (something like gas line) and stick one end up to your ear while running the other end around where you think the leak is. This will give you a stethoscope effect and you should be able to hear the leak. You also might feel some heat from a leak coming through the hose.
