Voltage regulator going out. Is dealer the only source?

a bad VR will either allow voltage higher than 14.8 DC to reach the battery or allow AC voltage to pass.
are you sure of your diagnosis ?
Does your VR have a good ground connection ?
is the wire to the battery in good shape ?
is your battery good ?
most charging system checks require a fully charged good battery, other wise the results are unreliable.
and checks are the thing to do before "replacing parts", cheaper too

Thanks for your replies.
The battery is only a couple of months old, and the first thing I did after I initially had the lights come on, was clean terminals and check connections. Having said that, no, I am not absolutely sure its the voltage regulator, but plenty of people have gone through the same thing, same problem, and it got resolved with a new one.
Negative on aftermarket voltage regulator?
Thanks,
Roberto

J & P Cycles shows lots of choices, most for about $100 less than the Harley branded unit. I now have a "Cycle Electric Regulator" which I installed early last spring on my 08 Road King. The manufacturer claims it works a bit differently and is easier on the stator than the factory type. It has worked flawlessly from day 1.
I went through checking the stator, all the connections and still got an intermittent electrical warning light after all of that. There was an independent repair shop near me who handled this brand for a competitive price. It used the plugs on my wires, no modifications needed and it fit right onto the mounting studs-plug and play. Couldn't have been easier.
After you decide what you want, enter it in Google and click the "shopping" button. You might find a good deal.
