The key turned but the latch never opened.
So i just spent the last hour or so, trying to use a brass feeler gauge as suggested here https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...fuel-door.html but no luck.

I also thought maybe i could remove the chrome cover on top of the tank and access it from the back. I had a look in my service manual and it just says to remove the seat, remove the one hex head bolt and the one socket head cap screw from the front of the cover. Did all that and it seems like something under the gas cover is keeping it from coming off.

Before i have to shell out the dough to the dealer or a locksmith, im wondering if anyone here has any idea on how to get the thing open without prying or forcing it.
juwt had this same issue last week when i lost my key and what i did what drilled a hole into the cap at an angle making sure to get thru the cap but not damage the threads on the tank itself. once i did that, i then stuck a screwdrive into the drilled hole and turned it until it came off. had to replace the cap but it was the only option for me. hope this helps

Sounds like you couldn't get your fuel cap off, the OP can't get his fuel DOOR open.

To the OP, have you tried blasting with wd-40 and working the key back and forth? Don't be a caveman about it, if you rotated past the normal points of rotation, I'm not sure what that may have done to the tumbler pins and springs

Nope didnt try it. After i forced it, it now turns easily from the lock to unlock position. Hopefully the screw driver trick works.

Definitely go with the push button. And when you know you are going to be on a toll road you can stash some cash there for quicker stops at the toll gate.

Not a bad idea, but prior to a trip to Rolling Thunder 2 years ago, i opted to put a Fastpass transponder under the faring. Works great.

Got around to trying the screw driver trick to open the cover and no luck so far. Any other ideas anyone?

You should be able to use a slide hammer to just pop the lock off of it. If you don't know what a slide hammer is or how to use one, you local auto body shop will have one. (But now you're back to paying someone else to work on it). The lock will be trashed when you are finished.
