There is a little bit of science to it, cold air is denser more oxygen per cubic foot than warmer air. So you're burning your fuel more completely. Same reason guys with turbos run intercoolers. I'm going to ASSUME that the ECU takes temperature into consideration just an educated guess though. Plus sounds travels better in cooler air, I know that from years of running live outdoor shows. Plus your engine is also getting better cooling over the fins too. I can attest that my RK absolutely loves cool air it's very happy @ about 50*F. Never was brave enough to run @ 30* because we always seem to have this funny white stuff around here anytime its that cold....

Mine seem to run better the other day at 45 degrees. At idle I know I hear a little less racket going on. Mine is a little rich at idle and it hunts about 75 rpm. I also get a exhaust backfire quit often on startup so I think the injectors are leaking a little. That tends to make engine rattle. With the cooler denser air it is a tad bit smother. Always something however. I had just started it and as it idled down from 1500 to 1100 or so it shut off with a bump and blew the dip stick out. (it's a temperature one and has gotten a little loose) Hit the starter and cranked about 20 seconds and it was not firing. Keyed it off and on and re-hit starter and it started right back up..
