Service manual torque value....THIS CAN'T BE RIGHT
Long story short I putting a wrinkle black cover on the engine of my 2012 Street Glide. The service manual list 144-156 in-lbs for the primary cover...I'm thinking man that can't be right.
So I check the manual for my 2010 Dyna and it lists 108-120 in-lbs.
They are basically the same covers and bolts...so what gives?
Can anyone check the values for other year model touring bikes and tell me what it list?
This might be stating the obvious, but I would like to reiterate the fact that the value is in
inches-lbs, NOT foot-lbs.
That sounds about right.
If read my post you will see that I listed both values as in lbs, so yes I know it is in lbs.
But 108-120 in-lbs compared to 144-156 in-lbs is a pretty significant difference. I would say enough to at least strip out the heads if not break the bolt all together.
Why did ya buy a service manual or look in it if ya ain't gonna follow it? I'm sure it will work either way, but maybe there is a reason the values changed.

Because that seems awful hight for that type of fastener. You ever turn wrenches on your bike, I'm guessing no? If you did you'd know that that exact same fastener is on all the covers (tranny top and side, cam cover and outer primary) on the engine except the rocker box tops and none of the values are higher than 120 in lbs.
How do I know that you ask...because I have the service manuals and look at them while I'm working on my bikes.
I question what's in the manual for the 2012 touring bikes beacuse I don't want to strip out a bolt head or threads.
Identify the thread size, then check a "generic" torque chart, if it isn't higher than that, it should be ok. My 06 calls for 84-108 in/lb, so there is obviously something different among the models/years.
