Title says it. It was a police bike, then one owner with 25k miles. It's a EFI bike. What should I look out for and or check?

Cam chain tensioners need to be raplaced around 30k miles on this year TC88 motors. Ask if done. If seller says yes, make sure you see receipt. Also ask to see proof of regular maint since seller has owned it. Beyond that, just give it a good once over checking condition of tires, brakes, and rest of bike.

Take a friend to look over it with you. While you stand there seeing what you want to, hopefully he will spot anything you should see! As Stew suggests ask for its service record.

Take a good look at the compensator and tensioners, the pre-SE design didn't handle the abuse for too long and the tensioners broke apart too soon.

The compensator wasn't a problem until the 07 year for touring bikes. If the cam chain tensioners haven't been changed they need to be checked regularly, they can fail in as little as 20K or last as long as 75K miles.

since it was a former police bike i would want to see under the fairing,a few police bikes get hack jobs when all the cop electronics are removed.

Not that you are going to get a look at the tensioners, unless you're going to pull the exhaust and cam chain cover while the owner looks on, don't be scared off by the tensioners, they have been known to go bad on "some" bikes but not a given, below are mine at 25k on an 05

What these guys said plus be practical. Look at the air filter take the seat off kick the tires, I have found that sometimes it is just the small things. Buying motorcycles, cars, and 4 wheelers, the air cleaner is the first thing I always look at. It seems petty but if you cant keep a clean air filter in the damn thing, what else have you overlooked?

When I had my 05, I had the cam tensioners looked at at it cost me about $85 from Harley to get it done. I didnt think the buyer would be to keen on me asking to pull exhaust etc to check it out so I made a deal that I would pay for the inspection. Sounds crazy but he was happy to let me do that and for $85 I was able to see that an 05 with 30,000 miles still had alot of life left in the bike. I was also already at the dealership so I bounced my concerns off of them and my observations and was able to make a good buying decision.

In my world, I have to give myself a day to think about things. I have burnt myself on impulse buys. If you are like me this will give you a few days to think things over as well.

Good luck.
