Most likely a wire with compromised insulation resulting in a dead short. I'd start tracing the headlight wiring looking for the damaged area. An ohm meter can be of help in isolating the actual wire where the problem exists.

examine the fuse- if the fuse media is splattered and black soot is inside the housing, you have a short circuit.

if you bike is lowered the rear tire may have chewed up the wiring to the tailight.

if that is ok,

pull the bulbs out and test again.

you have to work through methodical- if you are not good with electrical, get a Pal to help.

electrical knowledge is required, not specific motorcycle knowledge

The thing to remember is that if you try to ohm out the hot wire to ground on a lighting circuit, you will read very low resistance because of the light bulbs. Unplug your headlight and remove all the bulbs on the circuit to make it a lot easier.

I'd start with the easy stuff first, bulbs, sometimes they can blow in a funny way that creates a dead short. Pull them all out and see if short is still there, if it is, I'd look closely at the wires starting with the tail lights from under the fender and around seat looking for a chaffed wire.

All great advice. I'd start at the rear and work forwards.

I had a similar prob with my RKC. Wire behind the headlight had the insulation rubbed off by rubbing against the head tube. Shorted out the circuit.
