Default Riddle me this...

Just bought my first HD, 2001 E-Glide Standard. My riding buddy has a few Harleys, one of which is an 2001 Ultra Classic, he is running a true dual setup, SE Air Cleaner, SE 203 cams and a dyno tune. I am bone stock with a set of cycle shack slip ons. His bike is FI and mine is CV, for some reason we are running damn near neck and neck. Does the CV have that much of a power difference over the FI? I know that year of FI is not exactley great, but cant imagine it would be that much pf a downgrade... Thoughts?

when you start adding parts, it doesn't always mean more, sometimes it robs power.. even on a dyno tune, they try to get all the peek power they can, that makes a good drag racer, but it is useless in the range you need it on the street.

I suspect that the cam (which is a low/middle cam) is being offset by the True Duals which can have a hole in the torque curve lower down. Then the early spec'n FI won't be better than the CV but might equal it on a good day. So the parts combination is sub-optimal. Been there, done that myself

I am thinking if I go with either a 2 into 1 or a dual setup with a cross over I should see more of an increase than he did with his true duals... Old hot rodding logic is telling me that true duals are better for top end, with the loss of backpressure generally comes a dip in the torque curve...

Not a lot to go on, rider skill alone could account for a big difference, I wouldn't jump on the anti-FI bandwagon based on your observation.

That and your standard is some lighter than an ultra

I would bet the true duals are his downfall, I weigh more than my nephew , he is on an 07 dyna, and we can't gain on each other at all, unless I have all my bags full , and then he will walk away.

Switch bikes. Ride for a while so you each get a feel for them and then see if the results are the same. That will help you figure out if it is a bike difference or a rider difference.

I have put about 500 miles on his, part of the reason I bought a bagger....but did exactley this the other day. Switched riders and got close to the same result. If anything mine (carb bike) was a little faster with him riding it due to me having about thirty pounds of body weight on him. I dont think the tour pack and few pieces of chrome add enough weight to make that much of a diference.
One thing I noticed is that the carb bike has almost instant throttle response compared to the FI bike. Pretty sure the biggest difference is his true duals and the throttle reponse. I am going put mine on a dyno before I do cams and AC, curious to compare my before dyno sheet to his after dyno. REALLY curious to compare my after dyno to his....
