Harley has a built in virus that does that at 50K. It enables you to convince the wife that you need a new one. There is a simple override for it but not sure what.
On the serious side if you start it in gear with clutch pulled in what does it do.

Does the bike lurch when you put it in gear like the clutch is not releasing?
By the way i love the pic, I used to live in Mtn View, sure miss the ride over highway 9 from Saratoga to Santa Cruz, then up or down the coast depending on the mood. Not a lot of roads like that in Nebraska.

I know this thread is old as dirt, but may still help someone else. If you have a hydraulic clutch and haven't ridden in a few days or more, chances are you just need to pump fluid through the clutch. Squeeze the clutch and release it about 15-20 times and try again. Happens to me when I dont ride for a week or 2.

IT is a permissive to start ,clutch or in neutral. Mine failed and had to start on neutral. Mine was just the connector.

I know old thread but people find them. US bikes then did not have kickstand interlock
