Default 18" or 17" rear wheel

Looking for opinions on 18" or 17" rear wheel. I know with the 18, you can go up to 180 rear tire with out an mods. With the 17" rear wheel you can go up to 200 rear wheel. Are there any mods that need to be done with a 17 wheel? Does it ride better? Any info would help.

It would probably help if you listed the year and model of the bike you're talking about. My stock 16" rear on my 2011 RK has a 180 tire on it from the factory.

I've only heard that if you go to an 18 on a FLHX you can get some rubbing. But 17 will work no problem.

There have been several threads started here before about 2009 and up bikes having a wobble problem running an 18" with a 200 rear tire. But no problems with a 17" and 200 tire.

To some degree it also depends what you are using your bike for. The stock size has a good load rating for riding 2-up plus the kitchen sink. If you want to do that with custom size wheels, check what tyres are available with suitable load ratings.

I have a 17 / 50 / 200 rear with no problems. Got the wheels from HogPro.

I went to a 18/200 wheel/tire on the rear of an 09 SG. Developed a wobble immediately.

same here; damn near killed myself going through wide sweeping turn; I went to the nearest HD dealer and put a 180 on it. Go with the 17/200
