Default Question about"check engine" light

In the last few days my check engine light comes on when I turn the ignition on like it should,goes out when it starts,but has been coming back on for 5-10 seconds after it is running then goes out again after idle settles down. Is this something I should be concerned about? The light hasn't come on while driving. My only mods are Rush pipes,Arlen Ness Big Sucker and Thundermax tuner on a 2008 Ultra. Bike is running normal otherwise. Thanks for any info you may have.

Not sure how the engine light function has changed over ther years, but on my 02 Duece if the light comes back on and remains on for a few seconds then goes out, that signifies that you have some historic codes stored.

Since the light isn't staying on while you're riding, whatever the codes stored are, it is an intermitent fault that is causing it. If it was a continuous fault the light would stay on.

If the fault doesn't re-occur in 50 off-on-run cycles the code will clear itself, otherwise you will continue to see the light come back on for a few seconds during start up until you fix the problem and clear the code.

Yep, You've got a stored code. It's worth checking out, though it might not be anything important. If I remember correctly, it will go away after some number of starts it it doesn't recur.

Greetings mccstevie

Your 2008 Ultra is telling you when your check engine light comes on that there is a stored fault code stored on the computer of your bike.

They are called DTC codes, to find what is stored make sure your kill switch is in the run position then press and hold your odometer reset switch while turning on your bike.

The speed, tack will cycle full scale then release the odometer reset switch, diag should show where your digital mileage shows.

The display will show letters represent different components within your bike.

The letter blinking is the one that has a stored trouble code.

If you press and hold for a second your odometer reset button for the one that is blinking it will display the trouble code, write it down and press until is says END.

All you have to do is just turn your egnition switch to off to get out of this mode.

Speedometer Self Diagnostics:

The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate.
The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "P S SP t" the one flashing has a stored code.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)

P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])

S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)

SP = speedometer

T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

Perform a search for DTC to find more info.
