I ride casually and distance and my old helmet is miserable. Any tips on brand, type, what works and what doesn't would really be helpful. My current helmet works fine for city trips around the block, but it is overbearing while I'm on the road.

Any advice?

 

What are you looking for 1/2, 3/4, Full ???

 

I rarely wear one

But when I do, I have a H-D branded 1/2 with a little ducktail at the back.

this is the most stable helmet I've ever had, doesn't bobble around or lift up on the chin strap.

Good aerodynamics.

it is not this one but maybe kinda like it...I bought it in a close out as part of a lot ( riding gear, luggage, helmets etc.)

Honestly, I'm not completely sure yet. I've only ever used full, but maybe it's time to try something new. I'd really like to avoid pulling it off after a days ride and watering my bike with sweat.

However I've always really liked having the helmet there to guard against mouth bugs, chapped lips, and all that other random debris that will come from nowhere .

I have several helmets, but I mostly use a HD "Blade" 1/2 helmet w/internal shield for short rides and a HJC IS-MAX-BT modular helmet for touring. The HJC has my comm headset mounted on it. I also have a Scorpion EXO-100 1/2 helmet w/internal shield that is extremely comfortable. That's the Blade on my noggin in the photo below.

I was trying an IMC headset with the half helmet and didn't like it. After about an hour my ears hurt so damn bad I had to ditch the helmet and headset and rode around with a do-rag on for the rest of the day. So I'll stick with the HJC and mounted headset for touring.

 

I bought a new full face modular last year - it flips up for easy on & off - I bought a Schberth which is top of the line & yoy pay a price to get the best - when it's really hot out I feel better with a 1/2 DOT - not sure of the brand but it's really nice and also looks good - it was about 70 bucks -

I would guess your old bucket is really worthless - they say 5 to 7 years is the life span of a helmet - I had a 1/2 that i had for years - one day i dropped it - fell maybe 2 1/2 feet - when i pick it up there was a crack about 5 inches long!

I've got a Seer 3/4 (S 1607). It's got excellent weight, fit and balance. It's made right here in Colorado too. They will paint to your specs, and to match H-D colors. Since I got mine, they've gone to a lighter weight material, that gets it even more comfortable, and have improved the ventilation.

I have 2. The Nolan 103 for the full face modular design. But the one that I wear the most and is hands down the most comfortable that I have worn is the Super Seer S1602 with the cushion pads. Neither one of these helmets is cheap, but I think helmets are one area that you definately get what you pay for in comfort and protection.
